Community-based Teaching,
Learning & Research
2014 - Current
I have spent considerable effort focusing on the scholarship of teaching. I received University-wide recognition of my efforts in this scholarship when I received the University of North Florida Community-Engaged Scholarship award in 2018. This award reflects my commitment to community-based scholarship and rigorously examining my teaching, but it also represents my commitment to community-based research principles. A community-based approach to research increases the ecological validity, or how much my research can be applied in a meaningful way. My work should benefit the community from which I am gathering data and be informed by their expressed needs. Scholars should examine if their research interests are also something community members see as important. Furthermore, study results should be presented back to the community stakeholders and not just disseminating my work to academic outlets.
